Read MoreAre you that ordinary DJ who does nothing more than beatmatch songs in their set? Looking to mix it up a bit more? Then, this article is for you. We’ll show you how to put a little spice in your set and get the crowd pumped up. Only on InternetDJ.. Techniques other than beatmatching could also be used in your mix, no matter what kind of music you play. It’s a good way to impress the crowd and show them how good you are, and some of these tricks are real simple to do but effective. Let’s get started, shall we?“Scratching” – Simple scratching can also put a spice in your mix, although it requires a scratch record or a good sample on a song in your rack. you can get real fancy with scratching if you want but if you aren’t too capable for scratching like a DJ superstar, then I’d keep it simple if you haven’t got any practice and you are playing a nice record. While playing one record, scan the other one for nice sharp kicks or snares, then using your fader and hand simply move the record back and forth, (kind of like a baby scratch) and that should add some excitment. Do it right before a breakdown to let the crowd know you’re in control...
Read MoreMusicians are susceptible to writer’s block too, here are some healthy steps to help you break through.. Writer’s block is something which hits hard in the literary department, but producers and composers are not immune either. I’ll start this article off with a quick throw-back to the past to try and analyze this epidemic which can hinder your creative genius. I know a lot of people on the site have gone through the same ordeal, so I thought I would try to lay out my thoughts in a concise manner and maybe help some merging talent overcome this disease. When I stared off on iDJ as a producer, nearly three years ago – with five years of “the game” under the belt – I was still just an amateur producer trying to leave my mark. I was dropping about a track a week. It was easy, I used loops and tons of samples, just trying to find my way. I stumbled upon FL Studio in 2000 (then Fruity Loops 3) by accident, but I always loved listening to music and trying my hand at producing it was a logical next step. I listened to mostly mainstream rock and mainstream hip-hop. I got tired of hearing music on the radio and purchasing tapes I only half-liked, so I set out to make...
Read MoreSo you’ve got a track you want remixed, but what is a remix pack and how do you make a good one?. I’ve been doing a lot of remixes lately which got me thinking: “What is it about a particular track that makes me want to add my flavor to it?” and “What makes me lose interest in a production?” I’ve come up with several ideas, and want to share them with you. As remixes become a popular way to gain notoriety and respect in the growing online producer community, many various types of packs become available for you to play with. Some packs are good, some are bad, and some are just outright ugly. I am sure many have various opinions on the subject and the role of this article will be to examine some thoughts I’ve had, and to open the flood gates for commentary. In my experience, I’ve always desired to remix work which reaches out to me in one way or another. Most of the time, for me, its the melody. My remix style is generally an ‘overhaul’ style, as I like to call it. I like to take one or a few elements from a track and make them into something new, while maintaining the motif and allure of the original. For the purpose of this...
Read MoreThis follow up to my “The Mix vs. The Master” article focuses specifically on mixdown strategies.. This time we are going to explore tips on how to make your track sound good on various sound systems. While you may not have a million dollar studio, you can still derive professional quality sound out of your productions.. Generally, when working on a track you may do it in headphones but you should never make your final mix with headphones. There are several reasons for this:. 1. Most amateur headphones do not support a full frequency range and are specifically designed for peaking sounds, but may not give you a good overall feel for how your track would sound with different acoustic settings.. 2. While headphones are a great way to keep track of the many individual musical elements and their respective sound levels, you may wind up with a very different sound when playing your track back through your monitors.. So, when working on the mixdown you should take care to use your audio monitors to playback the sound. As mentioned in the previous article, it is helpful to compare your track to a professional production of the same genre.. A common mistake to make is to mixdown the project using output presets which you use for listening to music. When working on...
Read MoreWhat Are Bootleg Remixes?. If you’re already into the remixing scene, you’ve probably heard the term ‘bootleg,’ which is the industry term for an illegal remix. This simply means that the remixer has created a remix without getting permission from the original artist.. It’s important to note that while bootleg remixes are popular, they are still illegal to distribute and redistribute. However, the questionable legal status of such tracks doesn’t stop people from creating or distributing them. Indeed, a lot of great remixes over the years have been bootlegs!. You might decide that getting permission is too tricky and remix anyway, and then decide that the world needs to hear your bootleg. While the police are unlikely to kick your door down, you must tag your song as a bootleg so that others know that your track is a bootleg one and that sharing it is risky – after all, wouldn’t you appreciate the same warning?. How to remix a song like a boss. If you’ve been following this guide, then you should have completed your preparations and have all your legal stems ready to get started. Enough talk – lect’s get to the meat and talk about how you can start to remix your songs like a pro!. A quick history of remixing. This article is a comprehensive guide...
Read MoreListen to this technique in action on From the Underground from Love Deuce.. To hear what I’m on about check the latest track ‘From the Undergroud’ by Love Deuce.I recently discovered side chaining compressors on bass and other instruments, and in this song’s case, fed by the drums. Kinda milked it on this track but boy does it sound heavy and hard! Used wisely, you can create rhythm and movement to straight 1/16 patterns (good for Hi hat’s too) – where going to a 16C, 16D or 16E isn’t what you want. I use Logic, so here’s how you do it in Logic audio. There’s many things you could feed into the side-chain of a compressor from your mix but so you can hear what’s happening try this:You’ll need a tune on the go, eg drums, bass and a lead.Create a new track Grab a drum loop and run it on this new track (audio or a sampler)Audio Track: Turn off the main outputsSampler: Turn off the main outputs and instead, send to a new bus. Turn the bus outputs off. (you should still see the track playing)Next, say on your Hi Hats channel for instance, open a logic compressor. Select OPTO compressor. In the top right of the compressor you will see ‘side-chain’. Select from the menu the looped audio track...
Read MoreFirst, the easy one: MASTERING . Mastering is a post-production process which is generally done by professional mastering engineers. The purpose of mastering a track is to make it sound proper across a variety of audio output devices. More mastering history can be found in this Wikipedia article. The key thing to take into account as far as mastering goes is that it is generally done post-production and used to be a key process for producing top hit music.. And now for the elusive MIXDOWN : the mixdown is a term used widely in the electronica realm by producers which describes the process of aligning the musical elements on a particular track. The mixdown is a mid-production process.. With the rapid development in the field of DAWs more and more people are taking music production into their own hands. With advancements in technology and the internet it has become easier for individuals to make and market their own music, and hopefully keep the cost down. And so, in order to make sell-able music, the adventurous emerging producer usually becomes very familiar with the mixdown process.. The mixdown is almost an art of equalizing and compressing the musical elements in a track to compliment, and positively interact with, one another. This process can involve, but isn’t limited to: channel volume, panning, stereo separation, compression, frequency filtering, and layering.. Have you ever...
Read MoreFind out how one of our top electronic producers/composers creates music with a studio constructed on his own. Includes complete gear checklist and pictures of the setup.. The way I go about creating music is rather the old fashion midi-audio route. It means I record every midi note, which later commands my hardware gear to record it into wav in my favorite digital audio program. This might seem slow to some but I’ve manage to get used to my system very well and I’m able to crank out tracks faster and faster each time.. It all starts with my Akai MPC2000XL. This is not just a sampling drum machine known to the hip-hop world, but a center stage to my synthesizers, sound modules and drum machines. Since MIDI is the controller language, the MPC understands it via 4 inputs and outputs. Glued to my MPC like conjoined twins is my 61 key Korg triton. The triton is the controller for my studio and it’s MIDI output is routed into my MPC. From there, everything else gets controlled with the MPC as the master, keeping track of the tempo and all MIDI note record functions. Its easy to see how these two pieces of hardware are the main elements to my studio.. Morningstar’s Gear List. hardware SynthsKorg tritonKorg ms2000Korg poly800Korg ea-1Kawai...
Read MoreThis is the start of InternetDJ’s guide to rating and writing song reviews. The intention here is to provide a base point for discussion and enhancement. Post your comments in this article and we will revise via collective wisdom.. The art of review rating takes a minute to comprehend, however, to truly become a master of the process you’ll need to practice and thoroughly understand the subject matter under scrutiny. If you are not schooled in the subject, it is more difficult to accurately write a review or provide a rating, however, taste is subjective and judging the overall effectiveness of a song is possible regardless of the reviewer’s experience.. When asked to rate a track (from 1-10) and provide a review based on your rating, take the following notions into consideration:. Relevance: How well does the track relate to other tracks within the genre? Does the overall sound measure up when compared with others? Is it memorable?. Presentation: How well is the song mastered? Is this a final product? Or on its way to finality? Do all the parts work together to present a finished piece? You may want to hold off on a final rating if the author is just putting up a work-in-progress song. More times than not, the artist just wants to get some information on...
Read MoreStepping up – taking dreams to success. Study this thorough article from our editor on how to succeed in the industry as an artist. Only on InternetDJ.. Back in 2002 I wrote a popular piece on how to become a Professional DJ, at the time I promised to follow it up with an article on becoming a professional producer but then everything changed. The MP3 was tearing up the music industry, at the time the business was struggling to cope with the new media but in the years since digital music has been embraced and now it is the business. We have seen the file sharing revolution come and go as well as the rise of iTunes but now the field is opening up with a multitude of other companies jumping on the bandwagon. The end result is the death of the major labels and the rise of the successful independent artist. For the first time artists can distribute their music to a global audience without the backing of the major labels and distributors, what’s more they can get a bigger cut of the sales than they would have 5 years ago. With these factors in play shrewd artists can make a living off their music with little or no commercial backing, giving them the opportunity to really work at...
Read MoreThere are at least 46 million reasons to become a DJ. At least, there are if you can join the elite ranks of the industry. That’s because DJ powerhouse The Chainsmokers earns an incredible $46 million through DJing performances and streaming royalties in a single year. It was their popularity at clubs, festival appearances, and a multi-year residency at Wynn in Las Vegas that earned them that kind of cash. DJs who are just getting started aren’t going to see those kinds of numbers in their bank account. Yet there is a huge demand for their musical talent around the world at various clubs, festivals, and events. The global pandemic didn’t slow down the demand for great DJs, either. While the live music industry lost more than $9 billion in ticket sales, DJs were going strong online. Business Insider recently wrote about DJs moving their performances to online and virtual venues with huge success. Not even social distancing can slow them down.. It’s not the money and fan follow that leads most people to pursue their dreams of becoming a DJ, though. It’s a love of music, mixing, and creating powerful live performances that draws them to this career choice. Because being a DJ is so much more than hitting the play button. It’s about helping people experience music in...
