For years, pundits moaned that the U.S. never had festivals to rival European giants like Gatecrasher, Glastonbury, and the Love Parade, but that's all about to change. On March 22 at Miami's Bayfront Park: The world's greatest performers and DJs are coming out in full force for the fifth annual Ultra Music Festival, spreading the biggest and most impressive gathering of talent ever assembled in the U.S. over 10 diverse musical arenas for 13 nonstop hours. From the incomparable Underworld headlining under the stars to seminal forces like Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Sasha, and John Digweed rocking the main stages to exclusive live performances by UK sensation The Streets, progressive pioneers Hybrid, chart-topping Junkie XL, and Florida favorites Rabbit in the Moon, Ultra 2003 is the main attraction during the annual Winter Music Conference.

While additional stage lineups and set times are forthcoming, two main stages have announced their performer rosters for Ultra. BBCıs tastemaking Radio 1 will broadcast live from its Essential Mix Stage at the Ultra Music Festival, March 22, 2003 at downtown Miami's Bayfront Park. Pete Tong, the master of Radio 1ıs dance world, will headline the stage along with Radio 1 stalwarts Sandra Collins, Seb Fontaine, Sander Kleinenberg, Erick Morillo, John Creamer, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan, and Ralph Falcon.

"One of the most enjoyable things to do is to try to seek out new opportunities to do new and exciting live events," said Tong. "Ultra is in the best place itıs ever been, celebrating the end of the conference."

Both Tong and Sandra Collins will have their sets broadcast live to the United Kingdom on Radio 1 direct from Ultra, and dance music aficionados worldwide can tune in online via the BBC's website for broadcasts of the event, both live and recorded. Seb Fontaine will also broadcast live from Ultra, recapping the highlights of the Winter Music Conference from backstage. UK listeners can tune in from 2-4 a.m. UK time to catch the Tong/Collins broadcast and from 9 p.m. to midnight for Fontaineıs program. For those lucky enough to be at the Festival in Miami, the Essential Mix Stage will run from 12 noon until 1 a.m., Eastern Standard Time.

Tong has high hopes for Radio 1's Miami presence, particularly for US audiences. A recent broadcast of Tong from New Yorkıs Centro-Fly nightclub attracted the largest number of online listeners in the BBCıs history. "At the moment, the lifeline to America is the web, and many many thousands of expatriates do that, and now many thousands of Americans do it every week as well," Tong said. "We want to find a chance to get a proper outlet for the show, or a version of the show on a terrestrial station in the U.S. That's the big motivating factor why we did New York, and why weıre doing Miami."

Convincing Radio 1 to produce such an extensive presence at Ultra and the Winter Music Conference wasnıt an easy task, but for Tong, it all begins with the dance music fans of Florida and the rest of the world that descend on South Beach every year for this landmark event. "The thing that makes the nightlife so fantastic is that itıs real people there, and it's the evolution of the WMC that's enabled me to convince Radio One that they need to be in Miami," he said. "Miami is such a special city for America - it should be looked after."

Aside from the BBC stage, Ultra's Drum n' Bass Arena, presented by Contagious Musiq, promises to provide an amazing, pulse-quickening array of the genre's top artists. Where else can one find Mecury Prize-winner Roni Size dueling sets with legendary jungle wizard Goldie? The rest of the lineup will perform in back-to-back tandems, including DJ Craze with Adam F, Andy C with Bad Company UK; the esteemed Planet of the Drums crew featuring Dara, Dieselboy, and flamethrowing MC AK 1200; Krust & Die, members of Roni Size's frenetic Reprazent crew presenting their Kamanchi project; and amazing additional d n' b talent like Ed Rush, Optical, SS, Shy FX, DJ Rap, Wildchild, Total Science, Baron, Teebee, Bailey, High Contrast, Influx Datum, DB, Reid Speed, Know:el, Juju, DJ Dazee, and Empress.

The rest of the 10 stages are as follows: Ultra Amphitheatre, Ultra Soundstage, Ultra Club Experience, Breakbeat Stage, Space34 Arena, Basswalk Beach Stage, Cooljunkie.com Miami Tent, and the Florida Breaks Arena.
