Billie Joe returns to the show.
Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong is returning to Broadway, taking the stage for 50 performances of American Idiot, the show’s producers reported yesterday. The hit Broadway show is based on his band’s landmark punk-rock concept album, and Armstrong has agreed to retake the role of St. Jimmy beginning January 1 and running through February 27 at New York’s St. James Theatre.
Armstrong is returning in an effort to revive sagging ticket sales of the Tony Award nominee this year for best musical, as attendance at American Idiot shows in recent weeks has been hovering around the 50% capacity mark. Producers have learned from the experience of re-staging Armstrong, after he came to the rescue in late September and early October, prompting a strong surge in ticket sales for that period.
Green Day’s frontman is scheduled to appear in the musical Jan. 1-9, Jan. 18-30 and Feb. 10-27. He will be replacing the original Broadway cast member Tony Vincent, who will complete his run as St. Jimmy on Dec. 30.
