Coldplay's Latest Album Debuts at Number One on US Chart
Another album defies digital progress.
Coldplay's fourth album, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," sold over 720,000 copies in it's first week of sales and has claimed the #1 spot on the US top music chart, according to their label Capitol Records. Although slightly off their prior #1 debut "X&Y", which sold 737,000 in it's first week, "Viva" has defied the downward spiral that has mired the old music industry in recent years.
In addition to the United States, "Viva" is number one in Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany and France. The first single off the album, "Viva La Vida," has also made number one in the US and UK.
Due to massive lay-offs and restructuring at EMI, Capitol's UK parent company, Coldplay brought in their own marketing team to lead the album launch, according to a Reuters report. Singer/songwriter Chris Martin also heavily promoted the album with several free concerts in New York, Barcelona and London. Coldplay will begin their North American tour in Los Angeles on July 14.
