Coldplay follows in the melody snatching footsteps of The Verve and Oasis. According to a Reuters report, Joe Satriani has sued Coldplay for plagiarizing his 2004 song "If I Could Fly."
The suit, filed in Los Angeles federal court on December 4th, alleges that Coldplay used "substantial original portions" in their song "Viva La Vida."
Mr. Satriani is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" related to the alleged copyright infringement.
Here is a video that compares the two:
In October of this year, Oasis was accused of ripping off a portion of Cliff Richard's 1976 song "Devil Woman" in the recent single "The Turning." In 1997, The Verve settled with The Rolling Stones for their uncredited use of a sample from the Stones' "The Last Time" in "Bittersweet Symphony." The Verve barely saw the light of day after this incident. Given the examples above, Coldplay could be done for. What do you think?
