More about me:
I am an expert with activated carbon uses. Ac tivated carbon is a form of carbon derived from charcoal that has a very large surface area available for chemical reactions and absorptions. Activated carbon is manufactured to very be porous and thus able to produce a strong amount of absorption. Activated carbon is also called “Active” carbon. Microporosity of activated carbon is usually determined by testing nitrogen gas absorption. One gram of activated carbon typically has a surface area of 500m˛. Although normal activated carbon has a very high surface area, additional chemical treatment can yield more of the absorbing properties of the carbon. Some of the practical applications of activated carbon include: Water purification, medicine, metal extraction, sewage treatment, air filters and gas masks.

One of the most helpful uses of activated charcoal is removing pollutants from the air and water. Activated carbon can be used in both spill cleanup and air purification of chemical plants. Also, it can be used in groundwater remediation and drinking water filtration. Another applied use of activated carbon is the removal of volatile organic compound (VOCs) that are found in paint, dry cleaning, gasoline and other chemical products.

Perhaps the most widely-seen use of activated carbon is in the metal finishing industry. It is used for purification of electroplating solutions, which includes removing organic impurities from nickel. Multiple organic chemicals are used in metal plating to enhance their deposit qualities like brightness, ductility and smoothness. Unfortunately, when an electrical current is generated through the metal to apply these chemicals, many of the organic additives generate dangerous byproducts. An excessive buildup of these byproducts can harmfully affect the plating quality and physical properties of these metals. The utilization of activated carbon nullifies these impurities and restores plating performance to an acceptable level.
