Read my song reviews | Pros: Mastering Pads Phrasing Cons: Samples About Reviewer: Producer. Well, I'm not as verbose as varg1173, so my review will be comparatively succinct. The subtle melodies and lack of a palpable rhythm give this track a lucid quality, as though it might move anywhere at any moment. There is also a melancholic tone which I find attractive; it feels like a cool sadness washing over me. I'm not keen on the vocal samples from 01.16 as they seem almost a cliché in the context of an otherwise original track, and cause me to wake up out of the hypnosis this music induces; the content of the discussion seems trivial, and the American accents too generic. Every other element, however, fits snuggly, and makes this an enjoyable, emotive dip into ambient. Good work, sOuL_sCientiSt, as always :). (Posted on: Jul 5, 2009)

Read my song reviews | Pros: Samples Pads About Reviewer: Divine Messenger/Indigent/Performer/Producer First, in order to placate those assert reviews on this site should focus on the description of technology and a clinical identification of the way it affects the output of sound. (In art history we call this “formal analysis”---a methodology that only seeks to describe in detail all the visual characteristics of art object. It is a useful exercise because it helps prime one for deeper analysis on the interpretative level. ) Therefore, I will comment on "nightmare inside a damaged brain's" production values. Clearly, sOuL_sCientiSt has maintained a stylistic integrity amongst the quality of sound in his last ten releases. Musical warmth and a mix of wet and dry favoring the latter channel are the standard. Vocal samples are mostly low in the overall mix---which I hear some people consider poor production. There are a noticeable variety of volume changes; some tracks’ samples are high in the mix while others low or the middle. Listeners should have no trouble deducing sOuL_sCientiSt is no a mere one trick mix pony. One of the stylistic hallmarks of the music of sOuL_sCientiSt is a disparity between the semantic signification of titles and their actual sonic signature. "nightmare inside a damaged brain" suggests a loud, jarring track; a song brimming with fear and anxiety. Instead sOuL_sCientiSt perverts the denotation of a title into beautiful, occasionally pretty, sometimes transcendent songs. In this case a spacious atmosphere is more meditative than menacing. A song sample trickles in as a song within a song. The distant high-hat and fleeting vocals are audible but still enigmatic. The refrain speaks to the vague narrative created by the more prominent vocal samples. It also speaks to the listener--confronting and questioning volition, an existential nightmare befitting an amorphous soundbed. Although I might like an unexpected musical twist here or in a future track, sOuL_sCientiSt once again crafts a tight musical vignette without the slightest trace of self-indulgence.
